Two students from SAS Puxi, senior Stone Yan and freshman Nicole Tan, played in exhibition matches at the 2012 edition of the annual Shanghai Rolex Masters tennis tournament, which took place from October 8-14. “Wow,” said senior Nicholas Lim. “It’s truly amazing to realize we have such talented tennis players among our student body.” On the contrary, Stone commented, “It’s not even a big deal.”
The tournament attracted the best tennis players from around the world, including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, currently the three top-ranked players in the ATP World Tour. Over the course of one week, the four top-ranked players advanced into the semifinals, where Federer lost to 2011 champion Murray in two straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4, and Djovokic defeated Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic faced off against Murray in the finals, with Murray unsuccessfully defending his title after an intense match, ending with Djokovic outlasting Murray 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
